Steven Universe

The Steven Universe crew frequently gives information and answers via Twitter, Reddit AMAs, and the show's official podcast, with most information coming from Rebecca Sugar, Ian Jones-Quartey (who worked on the show prior to season 4), and Matt Burnett (head writer for the show and the movie).
  • Normal gems have No Biological Sex — or at least their Heart Drives don't. The shapes their bodies take can be gendered even if their default forms are not, which is how Rose was able to have a child. They don't perceive themselves as having genders either.
  • The order that Gems Fuse in does not make a difference to the outcome (i.e. both Amethyst Fusing with Sardonyx or Pearl Fusing with Sugilite would still form Alexandrite).
  • Steven is homeschooled by the Crystal Gems, although it doesn't seem to be a formal education.
  • Steven's healing spit actually could have repaired the geode in "House Guest" if it was working.
  • Kofi and his mother are immigrants from Ghana, but Jenny and Kiki grew up in Beach City.
  • Holidays such as Halloween don't exist.
  • Steven's birthday is on August 15, the same day as Steven Sugar's (Rebecca's brother).
  • Lion is not unaging like a gem, but he is aging very slowly. The same goes for Lars after he gets revived. On a related note, Lars potentially has all the powers that Lion does.
  • Centipeetle's commander is the same Hessonite from Save the Light.
  • Because of how Steven's powers affect his aging, he wouldn't "naturally" die of old age unless he wanted to.
  • In a Reddit AMA, Rebecca Sugar explained that the Diamonds' "sweat" as seen being collected in "Familiar" is an important part of the substance injected into Kindergartens, and that a Gem's color and personality are directly influenced by what Diamond made them. For Example
  • Ian Jones-Quartey stated on Twitter that intelligent life was not common in planets besides Earth that Gems colonized. More precisely, he emphasized that nothing in the show indicates that it was.

Steven Universe: The Movie

  • During an interview, Rebecca Sugar suggested Steven's experiences in "Change Your Mind" were part of why he was able to finally physically grow in the time between "Change Your Mind" and the movie.
  • While implied, the movie never explicitly reveals why Pink abandoned Spinel in the garden. In an article released after the movie aired, Rebecca Sugar states that Pink left Spinel behind because Pink felt she had outgrown her, not realizing how hurt Spinel would be when she found out their "game" was just an excuse to ditch her.
  • It's not explained how Spinel permanently changed her Shapeshifter Default Form between hearing Steven's message and arriving on Earth, as that usually requires a Gem's physical form to be destroyed. During a book signing, Rebecca Sugar explained that the crew have long thought Gems could be poofed by sheer emotional shock (the kind Spinel experienced upon learning Pink Diamond abandoned her), hence Eyeball's comment in the episode "Back to the Moon" that she "nearly dissipated [her] form" after learning she was assigned to look for Jasper.
