The Incredible Shrinking Day is an animated music video that runs 2 minutes and 20 seconds that is associated with Cartoon Network's Ed, Edd n Eddy, albeit there are so many deviances of creative freedom from the show that it's considered non-canon. The general plot of the video is that Sarah concocts a chemical that she passes off as lemonade to her brother Ed and his two friends Edd and Eddy which shrinks them down to doll-size. She stuffs them in a dollhouse and then the Eds attempt to run away from her.

The song is called "I'm Not Coming In Anymore" which was not created by They Might Be Giants contrary to popular belief. Instead, Garrett Freireich did the vocals and Stuart Hill was the lyricist. Freireich wrote that he was the singer in a comment of a video posted on YouTube that plays the song. The song is not offered on iTunes because it is available for free online.

Cartoon Network has broadcast this music video multiple times back in the 2000s decade during commercial breaks, thus allowing the majority of Ed, Edd n Eddy viewers to have seen it.

In 2020, Freirich made an acoustic cover of the song to further prove his involvement. He also released the original song without any sound effects from the music video on his website.

Tropes

  • Adaptation Deviation: Yowza, maybe the writers of this music video never even watched the cartoon!
    • Even accounting for the different art style, the characters are rather different: Eddy looks more like a fish, Ed and Edd look less human than on the show and Eddy actually has some hair as opposed to only 3 strands in the cartoon.
    • The Eds all possess a skateboard, a scooter, a bicycle and a surfboard in this music video and seem excited to use them. In the cartoon they only occasionally use these items, usually as part of a scam.
    • All three Eds run in a nearly identical manner - Ed doesn't position both his body and arms pointing backwards while running and Eddy doesn't bend over with his arms pointing forwards. Edd is the only one closest to how he actually runs.
    • Edd leaves a shirt under his bed and still puts it on anyways rather than take it to the laundry. In the cartoon, he's a germaphobic Neat Freak who keeps all his clothes inside an automated closet.
    • All three Eds drink Sarah's potion without hesitation. Ed would drink anything (especially from his sister), but Edd and Eddy in the cartoon would have been very suspicious with what she's giving them.
    • Sarah makes an actual shrinking potion via chemistry. The show had only ambiguously supernatural phenomena, and Sarah showed no aptitude for chemistry or other sciences.
    • Ed doesn't seem to have Super-Strength or Super-Toughness here. In the cartoon, he can lift a house with no effort and be flattened by a steamroller with himself no worse for wear seconds later. In this music video, it only takes a shoe landing on his head to knock him out and he seems to have a problem steering the toy car when he should have been able to carry that car on his back and run like hell.
  • Art Shift: The first quarter is entirely in the music video's unique art style. Once the Eds drink Sarah's potion and shrink, the background is all CGI while the Eds and Sarah are handdrawn.
  • Big Bad: Sarah literally is this given that she was dominating over the Eds through sheer size.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The Eds do return back to their normal sizes but in the process of doing so something knocked them all unconscious and therefore unable to get retribution on Sarah. Eddy was on the windowsill when he grew back but he lost balance and fell hard onto Sarah's floor, knocking him out. Edd was hiding under Sarah's bed, where he grew back and he hit his head on Sarah's bed. Ed was hiding in Sarah's shoe where he grew back and the shoe landed on his head, knocking him out as well.
  • Foreshadowing: Eddy burping helped him gain back some of his original size but he shrunk back again after a few seconds.
  • Idiot Ball: Eddy pulls this off when after the toy car's battery dies, he still stays in the car and relies on Ed and Edd to push the car forward. The result for Eddy is predictable.
    • All three Eds conducted this when they accepted "lemonade" from Sarah - even though they know just how horrible of a person Sarah is to them.
  • Incredible Shrinking Men: Well, teenage boys to be precise but you get the idea.
  • My Car Hates Me: The toy car that Eddy drove to get away from Sarah only lasted the Eds a few seconds for a headstart to run and therefore only mere feet away from Sarah.
  • Staircase Tumble: "Well I swing for the fences so that must make strike three!"
  • This Is Gonna Suck: While being entertained by one of the dolls that he has a pretend tea party with, Ed suddenly gets interrupted by Edd and Eddy rolling down the stairs. Ed's facial expression says it all.
  • The Voiceless: The Eds don't have any lines (therefore we don't hear Tony Sampson, Samuel Vincent or Matt Hill's voices) and Sarah only hums when the video began when she was making the shrinking chemical.
