A Betty Boop cartoon by Max and Dave Fleischer that was first released on November 3, 1933.
Betty Boop throws a Halloween party, but a bully of a gorilla crashes it.
Tropes Used In This Short:
- Art Initiates Life: The painted witches on the wall come to life to retaliate against the gorilla by bombarding him with jack-o-lanterns.
- Bigger on the Inside: When the Gorilla runs away scared while inside Betty's house, the interior becomes noticeably bigger thanks to a Wraparound Background and unusually high ceiling.
- By the Lights of Their Eyes: When Betty turns off the lights to escape the gorilla, only his eyes are visible along with a bunch of floating Halloween themed creatures.
- Circling Birdies: After a small bear gets knocked in the head by an apple on a string, a large star appears over his head which repeatedly melts.
- Cuckoo Clock Gag: A bird attending Betty's party perches on a cuckoo clock which opens and an arm hands him a mug of beer.
- Eat the Camera: At the end of Betty's song, a hippo eats the camera; there's a sign in his mouth pointing down his throat that reads, "Downtown".
- Eyes Out of Sight: The Scarecrow has a head made out of a broom brush with no facial features, but while reading the flyer for Betty's Halloween party, the bristles pull back, showing a pair of eyes hidden underneath.
- False Teeth Tomfoolery: A Funny Animal plays a game of trying to bite an apple on a string, when he bites into it a pair of false teeth leave his mouth and stick into the apple.
- Halloween Episode: Obviously from the title.
- Halloween Songs: Averted. Betty and her guests sing a song called "Let's All Sing Like the Birdies Sing", which really doesn't seem like a fitting song to sing on Halloween.
- Halloween Trickery: The Gorilla who even before crashing Betty's party, just strolls through the night, whacking everyone and everything he comes across with a weighted sock.
- Impact Silhouette: The Gorilla escapes from Betty's house by crashing through a wall creating a gorilla shaped hole, then the hole itself actually moves across the wall and slides out the door.
- Jack Frost: An impish version appears flying in an icy biplane with his name on the side as it sends a chill through the night.
- Killer Gorilla: A bully of a gorilla crashes Betty's party and tries to kidnap her.
- Owls Ask "Who?": The Gorilla comes across an owl:Gorilla: Hello, funny face.Owl: Whooo?Gorilla: Yooou! (hits him with a weighted sock)
- Panty Shot: When Betty answers the door and notices no one there, she bends forward with her back directly to the camera, showing her bloomers to the audience.
- Polka-Dot Paint: The Scarecrow helps Betty decorate by using a paintbrush to throw blobs of "witch paint" and "cat paint" against the wall, which instantly forms a picture of their respective names.
- Scary Scarecrows: A friendly non-scary version with a broom brush for a head and hands appears in the first half of the cartoon.
- Sock It to Them: The Gorilla uses one while walking down the street and whacks everything and everyone he comes across.
- That Cloud Looks Like...: The cartoon opens with a shot of the full moon with clouds passing by that look like a cat, a witch and a bat.
- The Voiceless: The Scarecrow doesn't talk, though it probably doesn't have a mouth.
- What Happened to the Mouse?: Once the party starts, Betty's scarecrow friend is nowhere to be seen.
- You All Look Familiar: The same fuzzy eared bear is reused in some shots, most noticeable when the guests first enter Betty's house and it's nothing but the same bear over and over again.
