Webcomic / Pokemon Abridgestery Dungeon

Go To

Pokémon Abridgestery Dungeon by ThatOneAceGuy is a retelling of the original Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team games in the form of a webcomic that takes, as the name implies, takes a lot of cues from the many Abridged Series on the internet.

A Mudkip who used to be a human wakes up in the Pokémon world with little memory of his life before, is picked up by a Pikachu named Cara, and starts a rescue team, all while wondering why exactly he ended up as a Pokémon in the first place. This isn't your typical semi-silent protagonist, though; Kip is a self-described meme goblin who's going to save the Pokémon world, even if they don't understand a single one of his references!

Pokémon Abridgestery Dungeon contains examples of:

  • Alt Text: Appears from the beginning, describing itself as the voice inside Kip's (very empty) head. It turns out to be a piece of Arceus, intended to keep nudging Kip in the right direction.
  • Amnesiac Hero: Though he doesn't forget everything about his old life as a human, there's a lot that Kip 'has' forgotten. He even has trouble remembering his own name when he wakes up in the Pokémon world. This was at his own request: "So my actions are really my own, no agenda attached."
  • Apologetic Attacker: Lombre, when he thinks Kip is the human from the Ninetales legend.
  • The Chosen One: In a manner of speaking; Gardevoir searched the human world for someone who would agree to travel to the Pokémon world to rescue it. Kieth/Kip became the chosen one because he volunteered to be.
  • Distant Finale: The final chapter, Postlude, is framed by an elderly Swampert Kip telling the story of Gengar's postgame quest.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": Played straight and averted. Most characters seem to be named for their species, or known by a diminutive nickname; Kip the Mudkip, Auntie Khan the Kangaskhan, Charley the Charizard (though he'd rather be known as Char), Percy the Persian. Averted with the handful of characters have otherwise normal names, like Cara the Pikachu.
  • Embarrassing First Name: Ron the Aggron. His full name is Rhonda.
  • Glowing Eyes: Kip's eyes take on a faint blue glow whenever he gets serious. This is revealed to be a 'piece' of Arceus that was nudging him in the right directions. And also happened to be the source of the comic's alt-text.
  • Heroic BSoD: As in the game, Kip is too shocked by Gengar's claim that he's the human from the Ninetales prophecy - and too afraid that it might be **true** to defend himself.
  • Jumped at the Call: Upon realising that there's no higher authority to turn to, Kip is very eager to lend a hand and become part of a rescue team with Cara. It turns out he jumped at the call to save the Pokémon world as well. It's implied that part of the reason is because he was stuck in a dead-end retail job without much hope for the future.
  • Laughing Mad: Kip after PokéSquare turns on him and Cara.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": When news comes that Team ACT, gold rank rescue team and perhaps the strongest team in the region, hasn't returned from Magma Cavern.
  • The Mind Is a Plaything of the Body: Kip finds the sensation of being immersed in water far more appealing than he was expecting.
  • Medium Blending: Occasional strips have brief sections of voice-acting linked in the description.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • On Chapter 3 page 5, Kip picks up a quest from the notice board written in Unown letters, which is picked up when he drops it by an irate-looking Grovyle. The translated text doubles as a shout out to Safety Not Guaranteed.
    • On Chapter 7 page 6 Kip and Cara walk past the cast of the anime Mystery Dungeon special. Kip and Squirtle, the transformed human of the special, both sense something off about the other...
  • Older Than They Look: While evolutionary stage doesn't necessarily imply age, most characters seem to assume that Kip and Cara are kids because they're still a Mudkip and a Pikachu respectively. It turns out, though, that Cara is 20 and Kip is 24.
  • Painting the Medium: The comic starts out in black and white, but slowly gains colour after each of Kip's dreams.
    • During the fight with Team ACT, the alt-text struggles with, and is briefly replaced by, Alakazam's psychic instructions to the rest of the team.
  • Running Gag:
    "Jump thing?"
    "Jump thing!"
    "Jump what?"
  • Shout-Out: Aside from his regular memeage, Kip also sings Thriller and Dare, and refers to Moltres as Colonel Sanders.
  • Waxing Lyrical: Kip, more than once, as befits his status as a human from our world. Cara gets in on the action a few times as well, albeit unintentionally.
  • What the Hell, Hero??: Cara calls out Kip's insistence on throwing insults at Moltres, explaining that they wouldn't have had to throw down with a legendary bird if they'd simply tried talking cordially to them.
