Siu Choi has a weight problem. Not for lack of trying. mind you. He simply can't shed his tubby physique no matter how diligently he diets and exercises. But he soon finds he has bigger problems when he's kidnapped by an old man with a magic bag. When Siu is finally released, he's surrounded by an entire horde of ravenous monsters waiting to eat him.

The old man who kidnapped him, the infamous Korean demon known as Mangtae Yeonggam, brought Siu to the demon realm to participate in the Great Festival held every 666 years to choose the Demon King who presides over all monsters. Unbeknownst to Siu, he is the last known descendant of the dokkaebi, the Korean goblin, and thus must represent his clan in the chaotic struggle to claim the crown. Thrust into a life-or-death struggle, Siu awakens his demonic blood to defend himself, finally shedding his fat and becoming musclebound in an instant.

Now forced to accept his inhumanity, Siu fights to become Demon King in order to reinstitute the rule that has kept mankind safe from demon predation for the past six centuries. Should he fail, he and everyone he loves will become food for the creatures of the night.

Night of the Goblin is a Korean webtoon written by munsik with art by dool. It follows Siu as he scrambles to gain the strength he needs to become the Demon King in just six months while his demonic powers change his relationships with everyone around him.

Night of the Goblin contains examples of:

  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: The Demon King is determined by the Great Festival, during which the strongest demon becomes king and gets to impose a rule on the rest of demonkind. Given the enormous authority this provides, every demonic family has heirs vying for the position of Demon King.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: After initially trying to rationalize his experiences in the demon realm as a strange dream, Siu is forced to accept reality when Mangtae exudes a wave of Killing Intent, causing Siu to reflexively jump the length of a school bus to get away. Seeing his own blatantly superhuman feats dispels any notion Siu had left of being a regular human being.
  • Muggle Best Friend: Subverted. Yushin is initially depicted as Siu's ordinary best friend from high school. Aside from Yushin's family coming from Old Money and owning a remote athletic training facility, Siu had no reason to believe Yushin had any ties to the supernatural until Yushin reveals his shamanic powers to attack an invading demon.
  • Our Goblins Are Different: Siu is a half-goblin, more specifically the dokkaebi, capricious demons of Korean folklore who are known to be huge and muscular like the Japanese Oni with a love of wrestling and trickery. In Siu's case, he retains his mostly human appearance after his transformation, but gains a red crystal horn that grants him access to a Morph Weapon while utilizing his demonic powers. He also has naturally-ingrained combat instincts such as an innate grasp of goblin ssireum (Korean wrestling) and the ability to react to any attack or tactic he's seen once already.
  • Weight Woe: Siu has been fat his whole life no matter how much he diets and exercises. This seriously impacts his ability to form relationships, as he gets rejected by a girl he confesses to because of his appearance and was mocked for it despite his impressive athleticism. His woe only ends upon becoming a demon, which has the side effect of instantly shedding his fat to become musclebound in an instant.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Hotness: Siu instantly sheds dozens of pounds of fat after struggling to lose weight his whole life upon awakening to his demonic powers. This leaves him with a trim, muscular, and toned physique to match his demonic Super-Strength.
