Left Tsushima, right Wafuko

Classmates Tsushima and Wafuko have been married years after graduating from high school. One day, Wafuko comes out to Tsushima as a trans woman. Fortunately for Wafuko, Tsushima is pansexual and it's not the first time someone came out to her as trans.

My Husband Was Actually a Woman (夫は実は女性でした, Otto wa Jitsu wa Josei Deshita) is a Japanese autobiographical webcomic by Tsushima Tsushima.

It was serialized on Twitter for fifteen posts from January 1, 2020 to July 20, 2020 before beginning serialization on Palcy on August 17, 2020. Kodansha published the webcomic in one book on October 13, 2020.

My Husband Was Actually a Woman provides examples of:

  • Coming Out to Spouse: The comic opens with Wafuko coming out to her wife Tsushima about being trans; Tsushima accepts the revalation very warmly.
  • Double Standard: Rape, Male on Male: Wafuko has been sexually harassed by cis men who think it's okay to do so to a "man."
  • If It's You, It's Okay: Wafuko is straight but she makes an exception for her cis wife.
  • Trans Equals Gay: The book reveals that Wafuko was briefly Mistaken for Gay when she hadn't come out as a trans woman yet.
  • Trans Tribulations: Wafuko is insecure about her deep voice and, when she was in high school, she tried to get rid of her genitalia by herself. She has also been sexually harassed by cis men who think it's okay to do so to a "man", something which Tsushima notes is common to trans women in general.
  • Trans Relationship Troubles: Defied. Because Tsushima is pansexual, her spouse coming out as a trans woman doesn't change how she feels about her at all.
