"Long story short: I'm you, you're me, there's a world inside the TV."
— Izanagi.
Persona 4 Abridged is an Abridged Series created by The Abridgigation Team in 2013.
To date it has seven episodes, two "Social Link" shorts and a one off parody of Akame ga Kill!. They also began doing bi-weekly podcasts called "Shuffle Time" in August 2015.
For a long time, series appeared to be dead, as it went completely silent after episode 7 in November 2015, but episode 8 finally aired in May 2021, with most of the original cast returning to reprise their roles.
Tropes related to the series:
- The Abridged Series: Duh!
- Affectionate Nickname: Yu has taken to calling Izanagi "Izzy".
- Affectionate Parody: It makes fun of the series, but it's obvious the team loves the original.
- Alpha Bitch: Rise makes no effort to hide this.
- Ambiguously Gay: Surprisingly averted with Kanji for the most part. Played straight with Kou, though.
- Breather Episode: Episode 4 skips the fight with Yukiko's shadow (because Yukiko accepted it without a fight) and instead focuses on Yu's time with Ai and the basketball team.
- Butt-Monkey: Yosuke just never seems to catch a break in this series. The abuse he gets from the others (Chie in particular) doesn't help.
- Comically Missing the Point:
- Chie: Still if Rise's coming here...Yosuke: Then she'll probably be a target.Kanji: Target of what?Yu: The killer who kidnapped you.Kanji: Someone kidnapped me!?
- Continuity Nod: Chie references the second Social Link video (which seems to be a separate story from the main series) in episode six:kicks YosukeYosuke: What was that for!?Chie: Training.
- Deadpan Snarker: Yu has his moments.
- The Ditz: Yukiko doesn't talk all that much in this series, but whenever she does, expect her to come with something dumb.
- Gilligan Cut: When trying to get Teddie to find Rise in the TV World.Yu: We need you to find someone for us.Teddie: Again?!Yu: She's a stripper.(cut to Marukyu Striptease)Teddie: And, she's in here!Yu: Works every time.
- Harsh Vocals: Pyro Jack tries to do this during his song in episode 3.
- Hulk Speak: Pyro Jack speaks like this.
- Kids Are Cruel: Nanako is implied to be this in episode 3 after she apparently kicked Yu out of the house.Yu: Her evil knows no bounds...
- Large Ham: Teddie. He even quotes Shakespeare in episode 6.
- Oh Me Accents Slipping: Elka Chan, Chie and Naoto's voice actress, is British and you can certainly hear it at times.
- Potty Emergency: Yosuke, of course, but not just the first time.Teddie: (from inside the TV) Last night, you stuck something in here and started liquidating the place—Yosuke: Hey, it was late at night and the bathrooms were locked, what the hell was I supposed to do?
- Shout-Out: Plenty to Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc.Naoto: No, that's wrong.(...)Yukiko: Hey, is that blood on the door?Chie: Blood isn't pink, Yukiko.Teddie: Puhuhuhuhu... you sure about that?
- Suicidal Overconfidence: Yu fails to understand how one-sided the fight against Shadow Rise is.Yu: (as Shadow Rise blasts them again) It's just a flesh wound, right Izzy?Izanagi: (lying on the ground with the other Personas) We're screwed.
- Suicide as Comedy: When Igor explains Social Links, Yu asks who could stretch themselves so thin between so many jobs and people in a year. Igor replies that the last guest to the Velvet Room did. Yu asks how he ended up.Igor: Uhh...Makoto: Fuck it. (shoots himself in the head)Igor: ...That's a story for another time.
- Third-Person Person: Pyro Jack always refers to himself this way.
- The Fourth Wall Will Not Protect You: Threatened in-universe when Teddie interrupts Shadow Yukiko's broadcast, and spots Yu on the other side of the screen.Teddie: Hey, are we on TV? Can people see me? (gasp) Is that Sensei?! Sensei! Sensei! Yu Narukami from class 2-2 at Yasogami High School! Hiiiii!
Tropes related to Shuffle Time:
- Cargo Ship: Reed and his tablet seems to be a Running Gag.
- Deer in the Headlights: Whenever someone makes a joke at Max after he makes fun of someone else, he appears to never quite hear it.
- Hates the Job, Loves the Limelight: Reed and Max seem to both hit this equally.
- Motor Mouth: Max (aka Skyjin 24) certainly qualifies.
- Once Done, Never Forgotten: No one's going to let Max forget the fact that he spent most of the second stream playing Borderlands instead of getting involved.
- One-Steve Limit: Averted. Jxsama 298 and Joeykat are both named Jordan. (Joeykat is refered to as "Joey" to avoid confusion.)
- Sir Swears-a-Lot: The whole team curses quite a lot. Joey was even challenged to swear in every sentance.
