The country of Great Britain is a railway country, with a history that spans the course of 150 years, with many stories to tell. These are the stories of the men, women, and steam locomotives who worked and served under the all-mighty power which was British Railways. A time of innovation, motivation, and change, for the men, women, their work, and the steam locomotives, and their services. These are the stories of the locomotives and their crews, who worked hard under the threat of their lines closing, their jobs changing, and simply replacement, whilst keeping their spirits high through their adventures. These are the stories of the Locomotives Of British Railways.
Opening Narration

Locomotives Of British Railways is a Supermarionation Web Video series created by Toby Loxton for TFL Creative Media.

The series follows the lives of the steam locomotives of British Rail, each season likely meant to be set in a different area of the network, and following a different cast of locomotives and their crews as they worked to keep their trains running smoothly, efficiently, and on time. So far, there is only one season.

  • Brighton: The season is set in Brighton Sheds and follows the lives of the locomotives who work there. These include 222 Squadron, aka "Johnnie" (voiced by Harry Walters) a Battle Of Britain Class express engine, Nicholas (voiced by Toby Loxton) the elderly T9, Rafferty (voiced by William Smith) the shunting engine, Oliver (voiced by Charlie Sharp) the nervous Q1, and Sir Kay (voiced by Greg Ivan Bicknell) the N15 "King Arthur" Class express engine. It also had minor characters like Shirly (voiced by Natasha Shaw Jones and Charlotte Loxton) and Albert (voiced by William Smith) the goods engines.

The series debuted on October 1st, 2017. The whole series can be watched here.

Locomotives Of British Railways contains examples of:

  • Alliterative Title: Series 1, Episode 1, Suburban Struggle.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: In "Suburban Struggle", Johnny and Nicholas get into an argument about how they believe trains should be pulled. Johnny believes that trains should be pulled fast, and that the passengers should get a thrill from their ride speeding down the tracks. Nicholas, meanwhile, believes that getting the trains to their destination on time and safely is more important. Rafferty tries to stop the arguments by suggesting that the two engines both have valid points, and could learn from each other.
  • Named After Someone Famous: Oliver, the Q1 locomotive, was named after his designer, Oliver Bulleid.
  • Narrator: The show has a narrator to set up the events of the show, introduce characters, and talk about certain facts about British Rail.
  • Sentient Vehicle: Naturally, the show is about living locomotives.
