"It's Me, Boy, I'm The PS5"
is a short video on TikTok in the "open verse challenge" stylenote , starting with a girl asking her partner to choose between her or a PlayStation 5. The original video is by Salem Ilese. Rather than responding as the target of this peculiar love triangle, user nickiskindastrange chose to be the console itself.
This work provides examples of:
- Adapted Out: Zig Zagged. The original side of the video (with the girl only) had no appearance of the boy, but it was intentionally made incomplete (as per the open verse challenge style), and most duets place the boy on the other side singing against the girl where the PS5 is.
- Black-and-Gray Morality: On the one hand, you have a woman who is willing to destroy someone's PS5 in order to get him to date her and is given no other characterization besides that, while on the other hand, you have a sapient console who genuinely seems to care about having fun with his potential suitor... who also claims that "you need me, boy!" and denies the existence of free will specifically for the boy.
- The Ghost: The boy. The PS5 and the girl are both talking to him throughout, and yet we have no clue as to what he looks like, sounds like, or anything else about him outside of his gender and role in the love triangle.
- Interrupted by the End: The PS5 is cut off mid-word by the video ending.PS5: Your free will is an illusi—
- Mood Whiplash: The first part of the video has the girl calmly singing while nickiskindastrange waits for his turn. Then she turns the mike over and Nick's demeanor completely shifts as he gets into character, adopting a manic look (complete with Scary Flashlight Face) and gremlinesque voice.
- Murder the Hypotenuse: The girl threatens to run the PS5 over if the boy doesn't choose her.
- No Name Given: None of the characters are given names. Justified in the PS5's case, as individual consoles are usually Never Given a Name of their own.
- Painful Rhyme: The PS5 is obviously struggling to come up with rhymes as the video progresses.PS5: Come with me and play my games! / We'll have cowboy times in—[falters]—space! Doo-doo-doo-doo, yeah!
- Scary Flashlight Face: When it's nickiskindastrange's turn, he turns a light on under his face to add to his character's manic air.
- Subverted Rhyme Every Occasion: "It's me, boy, I'm the PS5, speaking to you inside your..." Mind, right? Nope. Brain.
- Telepathy: The PS5 is projecting its words into the boy's mind.
- You Can't Fight Fate: Discussed. The system ends his turn with "YOUR FREE WILL IS AN ILLUSION!"
