A Halo 5 Machinima directed by Starfall Studios, Shift is a sci-fi drama about a ship techinican named Jonah, who is given the ability to shift through realities by an eccentric entity to prevent a terrible tragedy from taking place.

Uploaded September 24, 2016. A sequel was uploaded on December 14, 2018.

Shift and its sequel contain examples of:

  • Apocalypse How: The Virus intends to enact a Class Z in order to gain access to the Deep at the center of reality.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Of a sort. Jonah comes to name The Watcher Lucy, a name she sticks with.
  • Back from the Dead: Shepard saves Jonah from his death by shifting him out of that reality and sending the Virus back in his place.
  • Badass Boast: "I am the Watcher, protector of this planet, and you ARE IN MY WAY!"
  • Big Bad:
    • The original has The Captain.
    • The sequel has The Virus, a villainous alternate version of the Captain.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: The Captain. He poses as A Father to His Men, but kills them without hesitation and is not above framing Jonah to cover his sabotaging.
  • Boom, Headshot!: How Jonah kills the Captain.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Played with Lucy, due to being portrayed by a Monitor from the Halo franchise, most of whom are straight examples of A.I. Is a Crapshoot.
  • Deadly Gas: Turns out to have been the cause of the tragedy that took place on the planet Lucy was assigned to protect.
  • Greed: Implied to be the Captain's motive behind his actions.
  • The Hero Dies: Jonah. See Heroic Sacrifice below.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Jonah pulls one off in the end by self-destructing the ship before it can reach the planet and deploy its poisonous gas into the atmosphere.
  • Humans Are the Real Monsters: The plot revolves around the fact that humans were responsible for the tragedy that occurred on the planet simply so they could colonize it. Subverted in that the company and the Captain alone were the ones responsible, not humanity as a whole.
  • Mortal Wound Reveal: Jonah reveals he's been fatally shot by the Captain as he sends Miller into an escape pod. This is in part what leads him to pull off a Heroic Sacrifice.
  • Multiple Gunshot Death: Downplayed. After revealing his true colors, the Captain shoots Jonah numerous times in the chest. Subverted as Jonah doesn't die instantly, and manages to shrug off his wounds to ensure Miller survives and that the ship self-destructs before it can reach the planet.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: The Virus is this, desiring to end all of reality to access the Deep, killing countless living beings in the process.
  • The Reveal: A few.
    • The ship Jonah was stationed on turns out to have been the cause of the tragedy that occurred on the planet Lucy was programmed to protect.
    • Lucy's creators are human.
    • The Captain is responsible for sabotaging the ship and framing Jonah.
    • The Virus is actually an alternate version of the Captain who hsd been chosen instead of Jonah, who then killed his Watcher to keep his abilities.
