Hartup and Oatly is a
surrealist web series created by Bassetfilms on
Newgrounds and
YouTube, following the titular duo of Hartrup and Oatly as they go about their jobs at the DVD store.
Hartrup and Oatly provides examples of:
- All There in the Script: Pingo's name is never revealed outside of the credits.
- Amazing Technicolor Population: Every single character is a solid shade of a certain colour, for instance Hartrup is red and Oatly is blue.
- Brainwashed and Crazy: Hartrup convinces Oatly that he actually hates the cut-out, and makes him destroy it.
- Companion Cube: The Cutout in Episode One, which Oatly sets up a memorial for at the end of the episode, even regarding him as a "Brother".
- Cringe Comedy: Secret Friend revolves around Hartrup stealing a customers sock as a means of fulfilling his sock-sniffing fetish, culminating in the police getting called and digging through Hartrup's pants to find it.
- Foil: Hartrup is cynical and easily angered, while Oatly is kind-hearted and forgiving.
- His Name Really Is "Barkeep": According to the names engraved on the lockers, the boss's name really is "Boss".
- Smash Cut: At the end of The Cutout, where Hartrup lets out an enraged scream before being interrupted by the end of the episode.
- Speaking Simlish: The sock's voice seems to be some sort of instrument.
- Surreal Humor: Episodes tend to have a very bizarre basis in reality. For instance, the episode "Secret Friend" features Hartrup stealing someone's sock to fuel his sock-sniffing fetish, culminating with him getting thrown in jail.
