WMG / The Grinch (2018)

Go To

The Whos will look like the citizens of Thneedville from The Lorax if they were Whos

Justin Roiland will voice a character.
Illumination Entertainment has recently been using a lot of adult cartoon creator/voice actors in their films, like Seth MacFarlane in Sing and Trey Parker in Despicable Me 3. It only makes sense their next film will continue this pattern, and who else but a creator and voice actor on such a popular show like Rick and Morty? What about the title character?
  • The last part has been jossed as Benedict Cumberbatch is voicing the titular Grinch.
  • Though that doesn't mean he won't voice another character (likely maybe a jerkass character or a villain since Sing and Despicable Me 3 had those respective actors playing jerk characters).
  • Jossed. He wasn’t in this, but he was in Smallfoot, which came out two months before this. Does that count?

There will be references to Benedict Cumberbatch's previous roles, such as Sherlock.
I mean come on, it's way too easy.
  • Likely in the form of the Grinch getting his "wonderful awful idea" through a Sherlock Scan.
  • Jossed. There are no references.
  • Arguably the part where the Grinch falls through the giant Christmas tree and crashes into the ornament shaped like a red dragon could be a minor reference.

There will be a reference made to the Halloween is Grinch Night special.
Most likely in the form of that crazy paraphernalia wagon.

The Grinch's backstory in this film will be different from the one in the 2000 film.
Simply because it makes sense that Illumination would want their adaptation to be distinct from the Jim Carey version. Suggestions would be welcome.
  • Grinch's mother will have a cameo or even a minor role in the plot.
  • The trailer’s shows a child Grinch in a less-than-welcoming orphanage. So his general misanthropy might have stemmed from being alone Christmas after Christmas, or at least something along that line.
    • The above is confirmed.

The film will feature penguins.
Simply as an excuse to make a joke about Cumberbatch's tenancy to say "penguin" as "pengwing". Maybe they'll be the Minion-esque comic reliefs.
  • Jossed - There are no penguins.

As well as voicing the titular character, Cumberbatch will also narrate.
As a reference to Boris Karloff having a double-role as both the Grinch and the narrator in the original 1966 special.
  • Jossed- Cumberbatch isn't narrating, it's Pharrell Williams.

The Grinch will trick Cindy Lou Who into helping him steal Christmas.
The film's synopsis reveals that Cindy plans to trap Santa in order to thank him for all he has done. If she captures the Grinch disguised as Santa and if she is gullible enough to believe he really is Santa, then the Grinch could lie to her and ask her to help him take the Christmas stuff while saying all of it will be used for a huge Christmas party in the north pole. Only for the Grinch to send it to the top of Mount Crumpit and attempt to destroy everything just like in the book.
  • Extra points if Cindy has a My God, What Have I Done? reaction.
  • He tricks her into thinking he's taking her family's Christmas tree to Santa's workshop to repair a broken light. Her reaction was "It's my fault" but her mother comforts her.

The film will be better than the trailer makes it look.
Not great, and certainly not as good as the original special, but more So Okay, It's Average.

  • Confirmed — The film got generally mixed/positive reviews from film critics, who noted that while the movie itself may not add much to the legacy of the original, it's still a pretty good movie on its own and could easily hook modern children as well be appealing to fans of the original version.

The film will find a way to shoehorn in some toilet humour/fart jokes.
A lot of kid movies (most not all) seem to be hopping onto this bandwagon, and besides, this is Illumination we're talking about...
  • Jossed, surprisingly.

Minions will make a cameo in the movie, perhaps as an easter egg.
Illumination loves putting the Minions into their films, so it seems likely that the Minions will pop up at some point as an Easter Egg.
  • Jossed. Not even an Expy unless the screaming goat somehow counts. But given it only shows up like...three times, probably not.
