Cass gave up a baby for adoption.

Even though Mary was much nicer to Cass then anyone, save Roland, it doesn't make sense why she'd reach out to her. However, if Cass had given up a baby, she would know how important it is for Mary to have people to support her, which she obviously didn't have.
