Everyone is a copy.
The collector seeds gather up humans and a small sphere of their surroundings from all over Earth, and throughout centuries of time, but these disappearances (and the very conspicuous circular patches left behind) haven't seemingly been noticed by anyone.
Maybe the collector seeds don't actually *take* anything - they just scan a person and create a copy of them. The original stays on Earth and doesn't know what happened.
