The first TV series is set in an Alternate Universe.
After they found the TV station, and built the set, they went out and made what we know as first nine home videos (which were made between 1985 and 1987note , and it was then that they started doing their "music video countdown" style TV show. All of this is implied by this lyric in the theme song:- Hurry, hurry, hurry / Gotta get the power / There's lots of dozen buttons / Here come the lights! Gotta find locations / To make out own videosnote / Everyone get ready / We're gonna do it right!note
