Sid is The Father
The show focuses on a group of six friends, three male and three female, who each fill a similar role to the characters in the original series. Jesse is Ted, a passive male simp. The protagonist Sophie is Robin, a strong confident woman who’s unlucky at love. Valentina and Charlie are Lily and Marshall, the romantic couple who live with the protagonist and Ellen is Barney, the Lothario that’s always trying to hook up with women. This leaves Sid to fill the eventual role of The Father.- Ian most likely will fill the role of Victoria, he will return at some later point as a romantic plot device, but could also be substituted in as The Father in case something goes wrong such as poor chemistry or early cancellation.
- Season 2 seems to be going with a possible divorce between Sid and Hannah due to their long-distance relationship. And as seen in How I Met Your Mother, some long-distance relationships don't work out.
Sophie will have a cartoonized cameo of herself
It's bound to happen for Sophie to have a cartoonized form of herself to provide snarky commentary. The father wasn't shown in the first episode.
Just because Sophie met him that night, doesn't mean she mentioned him in the story. Sophie's son says at the beginning that he knows how his parents met, so he doesn't need to hear that again. The first episode may be about everything else that happened that night.- Supported by the fact that Drew is revealed to have been someone who Sophie first met during the events of the first episode, she just didn't remember until he reminded her of it, and he is a potential father.
- Jossed on Drew because Older Sophie mentioned his name to her son. If any of the male characters in the 1st episode gets their name mentioned by Older Sophie, that means they're no longer on the list of potential fathers. Charlie is also removed from the list because he got together with Valentina in the end and had a kid.
There would be a cameo from the How I Met Your Mother cast
The spinoff takes place in 2022 so, it's plausible that one of the main five would make a cameo such as an old Ted meeting Sophie and telling her not to give up on finding love or old Marshell and Lily revisiting their old apartment and asking Sid and Jesse on how they were doing.- Tracy could even make an appearance in an early season since she doesn’t die until 2024. She’s a professional bass player so she could be introduced as a friend of Jesse’s.
- Robin makes an appearance in episode 10, to listen to Sophie's story from the start of the series until that point and offering her advice.
- Barney showed up in a flash-forward in the first episode of Season 2.
Jesse is not The Father
Jesse is the main character that seems to have the most will they/won’t they set up with Sophie. Like in HIMYM, this will pay off with them getting together in the final episode of the first season. The season closes with Older Sophie narrating, ‘And that son, is how I got together with your Uncle Jesse.’ Recurring Jokes or elements from How I Met Your Mother will eventually appear in the show
Once the show finds its own identity several recurring jokes from How I Met Your Mother will appear to further establish it as a shared universe. IE Someone will mention "The Wedding Bride" as one of their favorite movies.- The Captain and Becky show up in the opening of Episode 9, with Older Sophie promising they will become relevant to her future relationship.
- The Captain makes an off-hand comment on the Pineapple Incident in episode 10.
Expanding on the above, HIMYF will explicitly contradict HIMYM.
After all, it's a different, but still unreliable narrator. Hannah is the Captain's daughter
A fairly popular theory in the fandom. In the parent series' episode "Blitzgiving", Zoey mentionned being the stepmother of a girl named Hannah who hates her guts despite her best efforts to bond with her. Since we are expected to see the Cpatin and Sophie crossing paths, it will probably through Sid's fiancée. One of the male character will read Barney's blog
