He just wants to know where his friend is...

The Friends We Left Behind is an indie horror game developed by Grant Marrs in 2023.

A private detective arrives at the abandoned Hathmoore Children's Asylum to search for clues to the disappearances of the children kept there and the corruption of the asylum. However, the moment he enters the building, he encounters danger in the form of strange creatures called Imaginary Friends that either want to play dangerous games with him or do him harm.

He'll have to figure out how to beat them in order to escape the asylum...

A prequel, Imaginary Friends Asylum, is currently in development.

The Friends We Left Behind plays with these examples:

  • Bedlam House: Hathmoore Children's Asylum
  • Escape from the Crazy Place: The detective has to find a way to survive and escape the Imaginary Friends if he wants to be able to leave the abandoned asylum in one piece.
  • Go Mad from the Isolation: Given that the asylum has been long abandoned and there are no children for them to interact with, it's safe to say that it didn't do the minds of the Imaginary Friends any favors.
  • Imaginary Friend: The threats the detective has to escape from.
  • Lobotomy: An article and a letter mention that one of the children, Annabelle, was lobotomized by the doctors ostensibly to cure her of her fixation over her "imaginary friend". The letter, however, had the writer express fear that she has developed an obsession to "fix" him as well.
  • Private Detective: The protagonist of the game, who ventures in Hathmoore Asylum to search for clues to expose the asylum's unethical practices on children.
