Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Five Pendants is a Fan Sequel to the SNES game featuring Mario where he finds himself trying to collect the five eponymous pendants which he can collect in any order. The game plays in real time with no turns.

  • Dirty Cop: Jon Bruin is a corrupt sheriff who would have people killed when they have slighted him and tries to make his deputy shoot Mario in spite of his protests.
  • Dual Boss: When Jon Bruin is fought as a boss, he has the aid of his deputy who shoots bullets at Mario.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Jon's deputy protests his boss's orders to shoot Mario but gets pressed into attempting to do it.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Old Man Wilson does not tolerate Jon Bruin's corruption and arms Mario with a fire flower so he can stand a chance.
  • Family-Unfriendly Death: Mario can get shot by the deputy sheriff before the game cuts to his funeral with his friends and relatives crying over his corpse in an open top coffin. Cartoony, but certainly a potential way to traumatise any younger Mario fans.
  • Invincible Minor Minion: Mario can cross paths with giant flowers that can harm him but cannot be harmed in turn.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Jon Bruin is eventually stripped of his position and Toad becomes the new police chief who proceeds to clean the corruption.
  • Persona Non Grata: In one bad ending, Luigi gets banned from El Cansado for leaving the faucet on which led to the room flooding.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: The deputy cannot stand his boss's corrupt deeds, but he cannot betray the job that was assigned to him.
  • Shout-Out: When Jon Bruin is faced in his boss fight, he says "Time to Pay" and uses a pair of barrels as a shield in a similar vein to the first boss from Sunset Riders.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Roco looks like Kroco and he explains that their resemblance was due to being brothers.
  • Worthless Treasure Twist: The eponymous pendants which seemingly are magical are nothing more than ordinary objects which prompts Mario to faint upon hearing this.
