* ContinuityNod: Being a game all about Sonic's history, there's loads of it.
** After rescuing Tails and points out the washed-out Green Hill Zone, Sonic refers to ''VideoGame/SonicAndTheSecretRings'' and ''VideoGame/SonicColors'' in the same sentence:
--->'''Tails:''' This place looks like something sucked out of life and color of
it. Now Totally strange.\\
'''Sonic:''' No stranger than rescuing genies in magic books or saving aliens in an interstellar amusement park.
** Some supporting characters are rescued in a stage they previously visited or have a connection to:
*** [[VideoGame/Sonic3AndKnuckles Knuckles in Sky Sanctuary]][[note]]The original version
has Knuckles help Sonic & Tails get to the Death Egg from there. It was also the location of Knuckles' FinalBoss.[[/note]]
*** After rescuing Knuckles, he performs a watered-down version of his Spiral Upper move from ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2''. He also (if Modern Sonic saved him) mentions that it's good to have his sanctuary back, referencing how the heroes' confrontations with Mecha Sonic ended up destroyed it.
** [[VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehogCD Amy's]] case is unexpected: While she is featured in Chemical Plant, the boss race against [[VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehogCD Metal Sonic in Stardust Speedway]] follows after that level, and Amy originally needed to be rescued from there.

** Modern Sonic first gets a tutorial on Light Dashing in Speed Highway -- ''Sonic Adventure'' was the first game to give Sonic that ability. On the same note, the first tutorial on the WallJump is in Seaside Hill, which gave the 'speed' member of each team[[note]]except Team Rose[[/note]]a wall-jumping ability -- including Sonic.
** One of the streets in Speed Highway is named 123 Omega Road, referencing Team Dark's E-123 Omega.
** In the 3DS version, Classic Sonic learns how to Homing Attack in Emerald Coast, which hails from [[VideoGame/SonicAdventure the game]] where he first displayed that ability.[[note]]The homing attack made
its own [[ContinuityNod/SonicGenerations page]].debut on the spin-off ''Sonic 3D'', but required a Gold Shield to be performed in that game. It wouldn't be until the Dreamcast era that it would become one of Sonic's signature abilites.[[/note]]
** [[VideoGame/SonicAdventure2 Sky Rail's]] propeller Springs can be found in one of Sky Sanctuary's [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ay6QMSEs challenges]].
** In the English pre-final boss cutscene, [[spoiler:Classic Tails refers to Classic Eggman as "Dr. Robotnik", then Classic Eggman corrects Classic Tails, stating that nobody calls him by that name anymore]].
** At the end of the game, it is revealed that [[spoiler:''Generations'' is the direct sequel to ''VideoGame/SonicColors''. To be more precise, while Eggman, Orbot, and Cubot were out in the middle of space after the events of ''Colors'', he discovered the Time Eater, which lead to the events of ''Generations''.]]
** After the credits, [[spoiler:Classic Eggman and Modern Eggman are arguing when Classic Eggman asks "Do we ever win?", Modern Eggman responds "That depends on your definition of 'win'". While Eggman has had short-term victories over the heroes (such as in ''Unleashed'' where he managed to build Eggmanland by successfully tricking Sonic into breaking the world apart), he also did technically win in ''VideoGame/SonicRiders'', but [[MeaninglessVillainVictory he only won a carpet that wasn't of use to him]]]].

** Even more so considering [[spoiler:the nature of the game as a sequel to the events of ''Colors''; direct continuity is something rarely seen in more recent ''Sonic'' titles, so having it established and directly referred to ''in a game all about Sonic's history'' is a notable achievement on Sonic Team's part]].
** In the English version, the game even acknowledges the [[DubNameChange Eggman/Robotnik]] debacle when [[spoiler:Classic]] Eggman states that no one calls him by his real name anymore (he was always named Eggman in Japanese, so that exchange is absent there).

* InternalHomage: Tons of them. Rooftop Run (originally from ''Sonic Unleashed'') has zipline platforms like in ''Sonic 2'''s Hill Top Zone and dropping platforms with spikes on them like in the original game's Marble Zone. And the Classic level ends with what appears to be ''Sonic & Knuckles''[='=] Flying Battery, complete with Eggman logo.

to:

* InternalHomage: Tons of them. While the game's level design is new, the levels reuse some elements from the original levels.
** Levels from the Genesis levels start exactly the same way as they did in the original games before straying for a new level design when playing as Classic Sonic, while the Dreamcast and Modern levels do the same when playing as Modern Sonic.[[note]][[VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006 Crisis City is the only level that doesn't do this, however.]][[/note]]
**

And the Classic level ends with what appears to be ''Sonic & Knuckles''[='=] Flying Battery, complete with Eggman logo. logo.
** The introduction scene for the boss battle against Perfect Chaos uses some shots taken from the opening to ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure'', including the camera zooming in on Perfect Chaos's eye, which opens and focuses on the camera/player.
** The introduction scene for Shadow's rival battle has Sonic and Shadow re-enacting the opening to ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2: Battle'', only in Final Rush instead of Radical Highway.
** When Sonic does a few air tricks and finishes his combo, he strikes a pose similar to the box art of ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure''.

* MissingTrailerScene: Before the release of the game, Sega released three CGI trailers that showed Classic and Modern Sonic running through a white Green Hill Zone, City Escape, and Rooftop Run together. While the levels were a part of the game, none of the footage from said trailers are shown in game. One of the Boss Fight trailers specifically shows Modern Sonic, Classic Sonic, Tails, and Classic Tails about to fight the Time Eater in Green Hill Zone, only for the actual confrontation to be in a completely different location. Only the first trailer, which had Modern and Classic Sonic running alongside each other, is hidden away in the game's AttractMode (and is thus entirely missable).

* MythologyGag: Being a MilestoneCelebration, ''Generations'' has a LOT of nods to previous games in the series.[[invoked]]
** Before the game was released, SEGA used the original blue-text-on-white-background logo, complete with "SEEGAA." It was changed to the newer one in the full game.
** Sonic calls himself "the fastest thing alive" in one of the first cutscenes of the [=3DS=] version, a reference to the opening theme from ''WesternAnimation/SonicTheHedgehogSatAM''.
** After completing Green Hill Zone, Tails says that it wasn't familiar to him. Green Hill Zone is from the original ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog1'', before Tails was in the series.
** This game's version of GreenHillZone has an expansive, flooded underground area, similar to the Master System/Game Gear version of the first ''Sonic'' game.
** After completing Chemical Plant Zone, Tails remarks how the pinkish-purple water makes him "really nervous for some reason". People who played ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2'' will likely agree with him, due to an infamous section in Act 2 [[RiseToTheChallenge where the water rises]], forcing Sonic and Tails to constantly jump up moving platforms to avoid drowning. Tails' discomfort references how even Sonic Team admitted that said level was too hard for that point in the game.
** Some supporting characters are rescued in a stage they previously visited or have a connection to:
*** [[VideoGame/SonicAdvance2 Cream & Cheese's]] appearance in [[VideoGame/SonicAdventure Speed Highway]] is unusual: Cream makes a cameo appearance in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure DX'', which was released near the time of ''VideoGame/SonicAdvance2'', her first appearance in the franchise. However, Cheese is a Chao and the first debut the Chao made were in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure''.
*** [[VideoGame/SonicAdventure2 Rouge in City Escape]][[note]]While Rouge isn't playable in the original City Escape, the level's debut, VideoGame/SonicAdventure2, is also her debut.[[/note]]
*** When Modern Sonic saves Rouge, she calls him "Big Blue", which was her nickname for him in ''VideoGame/SonicChronicles''.
*** [[VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006 Blaze in Crisis City]][[note]]Blaze made her debut in ''VideoGame/SonicRush'', but her first appearance on a console game was in ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006'', where she lived in Crisis City.[[/note]]
*** Upon being rescued, Blaze jumps through the scenery of Crisis City, resting at it's peak before returning to Sonic, referencing Silver's introductory movie in ''Sonic '06'', where she is seen rooftop hopping in a similar fashion.
*** [[VideoGame/SonicColors Charmy in Planet Wisp]][[note]]Team Chaotix makes cameos on the Platform/NintendoDS version of ''Colors'' in Planet Wisp's side missions, but are absent from the Wii version.[[/note]]
** Shadow guards the fourth Chaos Emerald, referencing an infamous line of his in ''VideoGame/ShadowTheHedgehog'': "Where's that DAMN fourth Chaos Emerald?"
** Crisis City spawned the "That tornado is carrying a car" meme and in the 2006 game, Sonic is running away from it. ''Generations'' sort of makes fun of this in two ways. In Act 1, Classic Sonic must hop through the floating platforms, some of which are cars. In Act 2, Modern Sonic is running ''towards'' the tornado. Three guesses as to what he's being attacked with, and the first two don't count. The achievement for running towards it without being hit further lampshades this.
** In City Escape, Bark the Polar Bear, Fang the Sniper (aka Nack the Weasel), and Bean the Dynamite appear on "Wanted" posters, and Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel appear [[ChuckCunninghamSyndrome on posters reading "Missing since 1993"]] -- 1993 being the year ''VideoGame/SegaSonicTheHedgehog'' came out, which was Mighty and Ray's debut (and Ray's only appearance as a playable character by that point; he wouldn't return until ''VideoGame/SonicMania''). Bark and Bean being on "Wanted" posters instead of Missing Person posters like the latter two references their AdaptationalVillainy from the Archie Comics.
** In Chemical Plant Zone Act 1, Sonic can sometimes outrun the screen. This is the only stage in which this can happen, and it was also possible in the original Chemical Plant Zone.
** WordOfGod says that the lifts and blimp in Rooftop Run are references to [[VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2 Hill Top Zone]] and [[VideoGame/Sonic3AndKnuckles Flying Battery Zone]] respectively.[[invoked]]
** Sonic shredding air guitar should look familiar to anyone who has seen ''WesternAnimation/SonicUnderground''.
** In the opening cutscene, Classic Sonic can briefly been seen having a sharp fang in his mouth. This is a nod to his early concept art, which depicted him as having fangs.
** Vector sets up a venue in one of the Modern Rooftop Run challenges, with him playing the keys. In the scrapped [[http://info.sonicretro.org/images/2/26/Sonicband.jpg Sonic Band]], he was the keyboardist.
** When Sonic's friends appear to cheer him on in the scene before the final battle, [[spoiler:Classic Eggman asks who Shadow and Rouge are, since they weren't in the classic games]].
** In TheStinger, [[spoiler:Classic Eggman mentions that he's thinking about getting a teaching degree. This is possibly a reference to the educational game ''VideoGame/SonicsSchoolhouse'', in which Eggman appeared as a teacher]].

* ContinuityNod: ''Sonic × Shadow Generations'' draws heavily upon 2005's ''Shadow the Hedgehog'', owing to it being the only game to feature Shadow as the lead role.
** Black Doom becomes the antagonist of Shadow's campaign after disappearing from the franchise for the first time in 19 years.
** Shadow's Homing Attack seen in the trailer has been modified to resemble his Chaos Control teleportation featured in the opening cinematic of ''Shadow the Hedgehog'', rather than simply being a copy of Sonic's Homing Attack.
** The background environments for at least one of Shadow's levels seen in the trailer is based on Westopolis, the first level of ''Shadow the Hedgehog''.

* PromotedToPlayable: In the original ''Generations'', Shadow was only a non-playable rival boss fight. In the ''Sonic X Shadow Generations'', he's been promoted to playable character status, and has his own story campaign.

to:

* InternalHomage: In the reveal trailer, when Shadow is back to back with Modern Sonic, they are posed in such a manner to recreate the title screen from ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2: Battle''.

** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUUJiF7syfQ The original teaser]] for ''Sonic Generations'' announced Classic Sonic's involvement in the title with a shot of the two Sonics leaping through the air, side by side. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMLVVtKwL-I The announcement trailer]] for ''Sonic × Shadow Generations'' features the same shot, only for Shadow to leap on to the screen from the opposite side to announce his involvement in the same manner.
** Shadow's name in the game's logo is spelled with his crest featured on the cover of ''VideoGame/ShadowTheHedgehog''.
* PromotedToPlayable: In the original ''Generations'', Shadow was only a non-playable rival boss fight. In the ''Sonic X × Shadow Generations'', he's been promoted to playable character status, and has his own story campaign.

In '"Generations'', Modern Sonic takes on Perfect Chaos as a mid-game boss without the power of the Emeralds and said super form. And ''wins''.
