Robo Aleste(Denin Aleste in Japan) is a Shoot 'Em Up made by Compile on the Sega CD. It is part of the Aleste series, and a direct Spiritual Successor to M.U.S.H.A.. It is notably the only game in the series to use the Aleste name in the North American release, and one of two in Europe (the other being Super Aleste).
A mysterious airship crashes in Japan during the Sengoku Period. This ship, driven by Steam-fuelled electricity, sparked a proliferation of technology across the country. Soon, wars weren't fought with just Ashigaru and Samurai, but Airships and Humongous Mecha as well.
During the wars, Oda Nobunaga becomes one of the strongest warlords, and soon finds himself facing an alliance alone after his remaining ally, Dosan Saito, is murdered by his own son. Nobunaga's only hope lies in White Fang, a secretive clan of mecha-piloting ninjas. One of them, Kage Okami, flies his machine Aleste into battle against Nobunaga's enemies.
Robo Aleste features the following tropes:
- Anachronism Stew: Tanks, Mecha, and Airships in Feudal Japan.
- Battleship Raid: Stage 5 is against a huge airship built by Takeda Shingen. He gets very upset when you wreck it.
- Demon King Nobunaga: Astaros claims that Nobunaga is this, and that she came to Earth to stop him.
- Cain and Abel: Tetsu Kurogane, Kage's adoptive brother in the Ninja clan that fights him three times over the course of the game.
- Mistaken Identity: Saeba accuses Kage of attacking her village, but it was actually Tetsu.
- See You in Hell: This is Tetsu's last sentence after losing his final duel with Kage."See you in hell, Kage…"
- "Shaggy Dog" Story: When Kage goes to confront Nobunaga, he finds that Akechi Mitsuhide got to him first.
- The Unfought: After Nobunaga is revealed to be a resurrected figure of Lucifer as well as the true Big Bad, Kage flies off to confront him, only to find him meeting his historical end, not even a proper Final Boss battle with him.Nobunaga: Just one more step and I could have grabbed the entire world... Such is life...
