Every night they keep calling me. They keep calling me from the depth of darkness...

Pulang : Insanity is a psychological horror game released by Indonesian company Ozysoft, with roots based on Nusantara (maritime South-East Asian) myths and culture, in particular urban legends and folklore from Ozysoft's native Indonesia.

Rudy, an unemployed family man living with his wife and daughter in downtown Jakarta, is through with being poor. Desperate for financial income to provide for his family, Rudy decides to invoke the "Pesugihan" ritual, one summoning supernatural forces from the Indonesian underworld for Rudy to make a deal with them; by providing sacrifices to the devil, Rudy will be rewarded financially. The ritual works, with Rudy landing himself a successful job and striking gold, but Rudy is unable to pay up on time.

Soon enough, Rudy finds himself plagued by the devil's minions, and everything goes to hell - literally. In development since 2013, Pulang: Insanity was released on March 2020. An Expansion Pack titled "Lunatic Edition" was made available

I need to find a way out and finish what I started.

  • 20 Minutes into the Past: The entire game is set in 2010, a decade before it's release date.
  • Accidental Murder: In the revelation flashback, Rudy's wife Bunga finally found out her husband's source of income, which leads to their lavish lifestyles, to be the deal he made with the devil and indulging in human sacrifice. She then confronts him while atop their mansion's tall balcony, when Rudy tries struggling with her only to push her over the side...
  • Bittersweet Ending: Rudy terminates the deal he made with the forces of evil, exorcising the spirits haunting him and escapes from the netherworld back to the human realm, but his wife Bunga and daughter Nissa are both still dead, the former he killed by accident. He then willingly turns himself over to the police, and sentenced to 10 years behind bars for involuntary manslaughter.
  • Content Warnings: There's one in the loading screen right after clicking START, for players with seizure issues (and no, it's not embellished, but is indeed as scary as claimed):
    MAJOR SEIZURE WARNING
THIS GAME HAS THE POTENTIAL TO INDUCE SEIZURES FOR PEOPLE WITH PHOTOSENSITIVE EPILEPSY
SOME PARTS OF THIS GAME MAY BE CONSIDERED VIOLENT OR CRUEL
  • Deal with the Devil: The "Pesugihan" ritual in Rudy's backstory, when he allows forces of the underworld to enter his life and turn it around for financial stability. Unfortunately, it requires Human Sacrifice on a regular basis, which Rudy is unable to provide...
  • Flying Face: Rudy encounters a penanggalan at one point, which he attacks in self-defense. Upon beating the creature to a pulp, he turns it around and is horrified to see his wife Bunga's face...
  • How We Got Here: The game's first cutscene sees Rudy being taunted by spirits he made a deal with, and him seeing his family with the devils and exclaiming "WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME!"... the game then slowly feeds the player details about how he got into his current predicament.
  • Jump Scare: The game does this fairly often, either with close-up of sneering ghosts or Rudy randomly seeing Nissa's spirits popping up in front of him. There's also that damn penanggalan-wife reveal...
  • Nightmare Fuel Coloring Book: Rudy can come across several drawings from Nissa, which depicts her dropping a classmate down a well, being followed by demons, and assorted creepy monstrosities.
  • Old School Building: Rudy can explore Nissa's school, which is abandoned in the present, at night. It's all kinds of creepy as expected.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Rudy's young daughter, Nissa, died in the backstory, though the game only reveals this fact in the first stage and isn't in any of the promotional materials. Allegedly, she's a troubled child who stepped off her school's balcony, but Rudy finds out she's posessed later on.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: Rudy's daughter Nissa, who got into trouble in school for threatening to push one of her classmates down a well and drown her. Rudy attends a PTA meeting during happier times before Nissa's death, and encounters the other student's angry mother demanding for Nissa to be expelled.
