Yes, we get the point.

Easy to Impale.
Hard as a Nail.

Impaler is a minimalist arena First-Person Shooter that throws you straight into an arena filled with various enemies from the underworld, with loads and loads of assorted firearms, and allows you to get straight into kicking ass with nary a storyline in sight.

And true to it's title, instead of the Standard FPS Guns (like the handgun which 99% of FPS games tends to give you by default) your first weapon is the titular Impaler, that instead of firing bullets, release a glowing projectile on the floor from whence a massive blade emerges, skewering enemies from right below.

Stick it in - Impalement Time!

  • Airborne Mooks: From flying demons to floating skulls and hooded demon heads. They're among the few enemies impervious to your Impaler, requiring you to swap to another weapon. (Alternatively, some of them are on ground level and needs time to take off - shoot and impale them before they're airborne)
  • Always Night: It's not clear what the game's setting is, but every single stage takes place indoors and it seems to be permanently dusk outside the windows.
  • Blob Monster: Green blob creatures with mouthful of fangs are a not-too-common enemy type.
  • Bloodstained Glass Windows: The entire game takes place inside a church infested with undead creatures and monsters, with stained glass windows and wall-mounted crosses visible everywhere.
  • Bullet Time: One of the power-ups makes everything in the ame run in slow-motion.
  • Camera Abuse: As you take damage, the screen's edges will become increasingly bloodied. Sometimes your POV will be splattered with plenty of red when you're hit.
  • Exploding Barrels: Barrels that explodes occasionally shows up, used for clearing large swathes of enemies at once. Somehow they be blow up even by impalement.
  • Gorn: The onscreen gore can get as bloody as an impalement-based game can be. Mooks embedded by spikes will either be messily ripped apart, or stay there with plenty of red dripping down. Even non-impalement kills have plenty of blood.
  • Grenade Launcher: Another gun you can collect besides the Impaler, whose explosion radius covers quite a wide range.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: The game's selling point. Interestingly you can inflict this on yourself - some levels have platforms that sends you into the air as you fire the Impaler on enemies underneath, but should you miss a jump while shooting below you...
  • No Plot? No Problem!: Who are you, and why are you in a dark room filled with all these monsters? What's with the impaling gun that summons spikes? And who even cares when you're busy decorating the entire place with impaled enemies?
  • Overheating: Bizzairely, your Impaler can suffer from excessive shooting and overheating resulting in decreased rate of fire. There's a pickup that can mitigate this issue.
  • Rocket Jump: Another function of the titular Impaler, which propels you to the air and cover quite some distance... while causing a spike to sprout where you're standing on moments ago. Just don't launch yourself vertically upwards to prevent an Accidental Suicide.
  • Smart Bomb: Which releases a circular explosion around you inflicting a wide damage radius on almost every onscreen enemy.
  • Succubi and Incubi: Succubis are a recurring enemy type (among the most frequently-encountered), depicted as nude women (don't worry, she's pixellated) with bat-like wings, horns, and attacks by leaping at you with their claws.
  • Weapon Title: The Impaler weapon which is the game's selling point. One that summons massive spikes from the ground (can be upgraded to swords later on) which deals a messy Impaled with Extreme Prejudice to enemies on the spot.
