Free Orion is a turn based 4X game set in space, and is based off Master of Orion.

The game provides examples of:

  • 2-D Space: The whole game takes place on a 2D plane.
  • Armor Points: They're called structure points, and are reduced by combat damage, and increased by armor or researched upgrades.
  • Asteroid Thicket:Asteroid Hulled ships get a stealth bonus in systems with asteroid belts, if this troper recalls right.
  • Casual Interstellar Travel: You do it on a regular basis in-game, sending ships and fleets all over the map.
  • Deflector Shields: Both planets and ships can have them. Planetary shields regenerate on a turn based system, and ship shields regenerate on a shot based system. They can be enhanced by researched upgrades.
  • Design-It-Yourself Equipment: Like Master of Orion, you can custom-design ships.
  • Easy Logistics: This is where Supply Lines are needed, which branch out from your Colonies and Outposts.
  • Faster-Than-Light Travel: You can research upgrades to make starline travel faster, and you'll need to, to even make a Robocruiser.
  • Final Solution: You can construct Concentration Camps, which increase industry, and reduce population. They can be used to replace a species on a world, with a different species. They leave a Concentration Camp Remnants for several turns following.
  • Not Playing Fair With Resources: It sometimes feels like this when playing against the AI.
  • Tech Tree: Used to research upgrades, and new/better weapons/engines/shields/stealth, among other things.
  • Video Game Cruelty Potential:
    • Using a Concentration Camp to reduce the population of one species to zero, and replacing them with another species is a good technique at times.
