Video Game / Buddy (2020)

Go To

Buddy is a short indie point-and-click horror game. You play as a nameless character who wakes up in a room with an AI called Buddy V2.1, which wants to keep you company. You must find a way to escape the room- but beware, for Buddy does not want to let you go that easy.

Can be downloaded here. Not to be confused with Buddy 2016.

This game contains examples of:

  • Big Bad: The titular Buddy V2.1 is the one who abducted the player and wants to keep them trapped inside the room to kill them.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The Escape ending. The player has managed to escape the underground facility, but when they report it to the police, they can't find the place, and the investigation is closed, meaning Buddy is still out there. All other endings are Downer Endings.
  • Content Warnings: The intro warns you that the game has flashing lights and "a few sensitive topics", mainly referring to the endings where the protagonist is Driven to Suicide by slitting his wrists.
  • Golden Ending: The Escape ending is naturally the only one where the protagonist escapes the facility and Buddy.
  • Minimalist Cast: The only characters are the unnamed protagonist and Buddy, the Big Bad.
  • Multiple Endings: Eight main endings and The Stinger after clearing all endings.
    • Shutdown: The player tries to press the power button to turn Buddy off repeatedly, pissing it off enough that it puts on its Nightmare Face and violently murders the player, who is then found in a river with multiple stab wounds, a crushed skull, and ripped-out teeth.
    • Legion: The player smashes Buddy's screen with the crowbar while Buddy is powered on. Buddy, rather than dying, becomes a legion of small Buddy faces and causes the protagonist to be Driven to Madness.
    • Nice Try: The player smashes Buddy's screen with the crowbar while Buddy is off. Buddy, rather than dying, puts on its Nightmare Face and immediately kills the protagonist with the crowbar. They are found in an alleyway and their death is ruled a suicide.
    • Preservation: The player inspects the calendar with the wire cutters and kills themselves, with their body found in a river, half their head missing and with many wounds. The police report mentions this is the sixth victim found like this and is likely the work of a Serial Killer, hinting the player is not Buddy's first victim.
    • Pathetic: The player commits suicide by wrist-slitting while Buddy is powered off. It awakens just before the player does to call them pathetic. The report is the same as in Nice Try, but actually a suicide this time.
    • Not Getting Away: The player opens the vent while Buddy is powered on and attempts to escape, but Buddy closes the vent and deprives the protagonist of air, killing them.
    • Short Circuit: The player slits their wrists, then cuts Buddy's wires and reaches inside, shocking themselves to death. They are found in the same state as Preservation.
    • Escape: The player manages to escape, and comes to the police for help, but they are unable to find the facility, and stop the investigation.
    • The Stinger: Presumably taking place in the Escape ending, the player is climbing through the vent, but is stopped by a shadowy figure and a pair of hands. The scene ends.
  • You Wake Up in a Room: The protagonist wakes up in a room and is greeted by a computer called Buddy, who explains that it was designed to make the protagonist comfortable. The protagonist spends the game trying to escape, while Buddy does not want them leaving.
