The legend of Shadowgate rests in your hands
back cover of the game.

Generations after the events of the original Shadowgate, Prince Erik returns to the kingdom where Belezaar has him falsely accused of Patricide and scheduled for execution in the morning. However, Erik manages to escape and must clear both his name and save the land from the Warlock Lord once again.

This game has since been ignored by future works such as Shadowgate 64 and a teaser feature featured in a remake of the first game.

This game provides examples of:

  • Asshole Victim: Belezaar murdered the king and framed his son, then attempted to sacrifice Elizabeth to the Warlock Lord. However, the Warlock Lord kills him first and nobody pities him.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Belezaar gets killed, the Warlock Lord is defeated, both Erik and his sister rule over the kingdom as the rightful rulers, and Lakmir sealed away Castle Shadwgate forever to ensure the Warlock Lord does not return, but King Aronde was murdered prior to the game and passed onto the afterlife.
  • Canon Discontinuity: 64 completely disregards Beyond, probably because so few people would have been able to play it in the first place. The teaser for the 2016 release Beyond Shadowgate seems to follow suit.
  • Damsel in Distress: Belezaar kidnaps Princess Elizabeth and intends to sacrifice her to the Warlock Lord.
  • Distressed Dude: Lakmir was taken captive so he does not interfere with the return of the Warlock Lord.
  • Eaten Alive: Choosing poorly will lead to the Warlock Lord eating off the upper half of Prince Erik's body.
  • Evil Is Not a Toy: Belezaar brings back the Warlock Lord to bring forth humanity to the slaughter, but the lord kills him on the spot as soon as he returns.
  • Frame-Up: Belezaar frames Prince Erik for the murder of his father in an attempt to prevent his interference with the return of the Warlock Lord.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be:Should the player choose poorly when fighing the Warlock Lord, he will chomp off the upper half of Erik's body.
  • Hijacked by Ganon: The moment Belezaar brings back the Warlock Lord, the latter kills him and proceeds to antagonize the prince and princess afterwards.
  • Off with His Head!: If Erik does not duck, the undead harpies will claw his head off.
  • Sadist: The Warlock Lord relishes in the fear of the captive Princess Elizabeth as he intends to devour her and her brother.
