- Cast the Expert: Marques Johnson and Freeman Williams, two former NBA stars, play two of the playground ballers (Raymond and Duck Johnson, respectively), and real-life singers Bill Henderson and Jon Hendricks as two of the "Venice Beach Boys" (the singing group at the beginning and end of the movie.
- Irony as She Is Cast: Despite what the title states, Woody Harrelson turned out to be significantly better at basketball than co-star Wesley Snipes, having played in college. That being said, when he bragged about his skills to former Detroit Pistons center Bob Lanier, who was coaching the stars for the movie, Lanier challenged Harrelson to a one on one game. Harrelson called it "the most embarrassing 15 minutes of my life."
- What Could Have Been:
- Charlie Sheen was the first choice for the role of Billy Hoyle. He turned it down, saying:"I didn't feel it would be any fun. I don't feel connected to basketball. At least, when I do a baseball movie, I know I'm gonna have a good time."
- David Duchovny and Keanu Reeves were also considered for Billy.
