Trivia / What If…? S1E2 "What If… T'Challa Became a Star-Lord?"

Go To

  • Acting for Two: Fred Tatasciore voices both Drax the Destroyer and Corvus Glaive in this episode.
  • Creator's Favorite Episode: Jeffrey Wright considers this episode to be one of his favorite episodes to narrate, due to the strength of Chadwick Boseman's performance and how special it was to be part of something with him.
  • In Memoriam: The episode is dedicated to Chadwick Boseman.
  • The Other Darrin:
    • Although most of the characters are voiced by the same actors as in the movies, the cameos by Drax, Corvus Glaive, and Peter Quill are voiced by different people: Drax and Corvus were voiced by Fred Tatasciore, while Quill was voiced by Brian T. Delaney.
    • A variation occurs with T'Chaka. In a scene set in T'Challa's childhood and prior to the events of the prologue of Black Panther, John Kani voices him. However, in the film, T'Chaka was voiced at that age by Kani's son Atandwa.
  • Poorly Disguised Pilot: This episode was originally conceived as the launching pad for a standalone series focusing on the adventures of Star Lord T'Challa. With the death of Chadwick Boseman, that series was scrapped.
  • Role Reprise: Many characters are voiced by their original actors in the MCU. In particular, we have Sean Gunn as Kraglin Obfonteri, Chris Sullivan as Taserface, Kurt Russell as Ego, and Ophelia Lovibond as Carina.
  • Throw It In!: Nebula calling T'Challa "Cha Cha" in this episode was improvised by Karen Gillan.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Boseman reportedly enjoyed this episode's more "jokey" version of T'Challa, and actually discussed incorporating elements of this into the Black Panther sequel.
    • The creative team behind What If...? even toyed with the idea of making a spin-off show starring Ravager T'Challa. Sadly, they never told Boseman about it, but they're sure he would've liked it.
