Trivia / Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid

• Anime First: The anime was the first of the three main projects to be released, though it had its own one-shot manga that came out before it.
• Banned in China: The series was essentially banned in the United Kingdom because of the BBFC demanding extensive cuts to teenage sexual activity and nudity throughout to get an 18 rating. The unnamed distributor canceled their plans to release the series, and it was also pulled from the Funimation UK site.
• Crossdressing Voice: Akira is the only guy on the island but he is voiced by a female seiyuu. This is one of the hints about his true gender.
• "Do It Yourself" Theme Tune: The opening is sung by Hitomi Harada (Momoka), while the ending is sung by Yuka Iguchi and Mikako Izawa in character as Mirei and Mamori.
  • During her Live shows Hitomi Harada sometimes included a special version of the ED sung in character as Momoka. In this version, the lyrics are changed accordingly to fit Momoka's Yandere tendencies.
• Playing Against Type: Yuka Iguchi tends to voice characters with high pitches. Unlike the deep-voiced Mirei.
• What Could Have Been:
  • Hitomi Harada was offered Mamori's role at first, she thought it didn't fit her and auditioned for Momoka instead.
  • During planning Meifong was considered to be a chubby and lazy girl but this was scrapped in favor of her final design. Her rejected design however, was retooled into a new character, E9.
  • The commentary for Episode 12 states that Momoka was supposed to die in the final fight against Mirei and Mamori but everyone on the staff grow fond of her and rewrote the climax so she would survive.
