Trivia / Unraveled

  • Approval of God:
    • Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser replied to "Waluigi, Unraveled" with several applause emojis.
    • 343 Industries gave "I read every Halo novel and became the Master Chief of loneliness" their recommendation in an issue of their "Canon Fodder" blog.
  • The Cast Showoff: Brian has training in musical theater, a talent he utilizes often.
  • Corpsing:
    • Despite the meticulous scripting involved in Unraveled, there are several moments where BDG is too tired to take his own work seriously, or his over-the-top nature causes a loud offscreen laugh from producer Patrick Gill. For example, from his Mega Man video:
BDG: We're getting to the ones where I can't stop laughing...we're serious. Snake Man. (everyone loses it)
    • Multiple times in the OSHA violation video.
    • The entirety of the Breath of the Wild cooking video is almost completely unscripted and therefore leaves BDG and guest host Adam Moussa a lot of room to goof around and break down laughing at each other's reactions to the worst of the dishes cooked.
BDG: If you say more than three hearts, I'm firing you.
Adam: It just tastes like honey - oh, there's the fish.
      BDG: (dies laughing)
  • Newbie Boom: Not only did "I read all 337 books in Skyrim so you don't have to" provide a boost to the series, but Unraveled itself could be said to be one for Polygon's video output, which had slumped somewhat following Monster Factory's hiatus and migration to a different channel.
  • Troubled Production:
    • It took Brian 3 tries to make the episode about Castlevania monsters, and it originally had a completely different premise before being retooled for both ease of production and Rule of Funny.
    • Season 3 in general has had a slowdown in the volume of videos and change in production values as BDG has shifted to filming and editing from home, while dealing with the stress and lethargy affecting many during the COVID-19 quarantines.
      • If the time stamps for first part of the Kirby episode are to be trusted, then the Kirby episode was SUPPOSED to be released between the Zelda recipes video and the Pet HP video, which also coincides with the longest gap between episodes that wasn't a season break.
      • The longest episode in production, the Halo episode, took over a year simply because Brian had to read 29 books, and could've been postponed even longer to wait for another book, which BDG decided not to do so that the video would actually come out.
      • When you realise that Brian had fully committed to leaving Polygon by the time he started actually writing this episode it's possible he chose his cut off point just to finish the episode before he left.
  • This interview that Brian did after leaving Polygon reveals a few interesting facts about the series including, but not limited to:
    • Unraveled came about because Polygon were trying to get their video team to make a series to replace Monster Factory after the McElroys left and the video team leader suggested Brian do a video on the Zelda timeline. Brian, who hated doing the topic because it had been covered elsewhere many times before, ended up making the episode the way it came out out of spite.
      • Relatedly, he genuinely doesn't like any topic that has been covered extensively before which is why he had such a visceral hatred of doing the Pokemon Edibilty episode.
    • Brian doesn't actually like the Skyrim video. He believes that it's not as interesting as other Unraveled episodes due to him just talking about the Skyrim books without actually coming to any grander point about it.
    • There was going to be an Unraveled live show in 2020 covering the question of "Games as Art." It was, naturally, cancelled after the plague hit.
    • Brian was very irritated that the upper management of VOX Media, who own Polygon, weren't doing enough to build up the other members of the video team and instead focusing their attention and resources on him, which is a big factor into why he left.
    • The story editor credit in Unraveled videos is used for when his collaborators at Polygon come in to focus down his research to a reasonable video length and add/punch up some jokes.
    • Brian almost got a chance to wear the official Crash Bandicoot suit for the Crash Bandicoot video. The only reason he couldn't is because he literally could not store it in his apartment and film the video without disturbing his roommates.
