- Creator Backlash: John Ford called this "the worst piece of crap I've made in 20 years". He hated the material, believing he had done a far better treatment of the theme in The Searchers. Even after he brought in his most trusted screenwriter, Frank Nugent—the man responsible for The Searchers and nine other Ford classics—to fix the script, the director said it was "still crap."
- Dawson Casting: Richard Widmark was initially reluctant to make the film, since he felt he was 15 years too old for the young lieutenant he played.
- Money, Dear Boy: John Ford did the film for the money ($225,000 plus 25% of the net profits) and as a favor to Columbia Pictures head Harry Cohn, who died in 1958.
- Playing Against Type: Jimmy Stewart in a western and he's playing an Anti-Hero.
- Recycled Set: The film was shot at the Alamo Village, the movie set originally created for The Alamo.
- Throw It In!: The dialog in the scene where Jimmy Stewart and Richard Widmark sit by the river was largely improvised.
- What Could Have Been: John Wayne and Henry Fonda were considered for the role of Marshall Guthrie McCabe. Wayne was unavailable and Fonda was ruled out due to having fallen out with Ford while making Mister Roberts.
