Trivia / The Zone of Interest

Go To

  • Enforced Method Acting: The production decided to forgo a traditional set experience for the scenes set in the Höss household, instead planting cameras across every inch of the house to monitor the actors' every move while Jonathan Glazer and the crew members watched from inside a nearby trailer. This was in order to emulate the discomforting and uneasy tone the film would take on.
  • Extremely Lengthy Creation: Due to the specificity of Jonathan Glazer's vision, the extensive research he undertook, and the film's decidedly uncommercial premise, it took ten years for The Zone of Interest to be made.
  • Playing Against Type: Sandra Hüller often plays layered, emotionally complex women, as seen in films like Toni Erdmann and Anatomy of a Fall. With Hedwig Höss, however, she deliberately avoided giving her any depth whatsoever, both to reflect Hedwig's lack of an inner life and because of Hüller's utter contempt for the character.
  • Production Posse: Jonathan Glazer once again collaborates with Mica Levi for the film's score, as well as Paul Watts for the editing, after working with them both for Under the Skin. Johnnie Burn, who worked in the sound department on Under the Skin, was put in charge of sound for The Zone of Interest.
  • Sleeper Hit: Despite its experimental nature and Audience-Alienating Premise, the film has grossed over $42 million worldwide, becoming one of the ten highest-grossing films released by A24.
  • What Could Have Been: Composer Mica Levi recorded a longer score on the film, but director Jonathan Glazer decided to go without music for most of the film, and instead let the viewers hear the off-screen horrors occurring in Auschwitz.
