- Completely Different Title: The original Dutch title is Spoorloos (roughly "Traceless"). It was released in English-speaking countries as The Vanishing and in France as L'homme qui voulait savoir (The Man Who Wanted to Know).
- Creator Backlash: George Sluizer hated the remake and regretted doing it due to the softening of the content and the ending being changed.
- Executive Meddling: The actors of the remake disagreed on the movie getting the same Downer Ending as the original and demanded the director to change it to a more uplifting ending. The critics, on the other hand, weren't happy with that decision. It didn't work commercially, either.
- Self-Remake: The 1993 film is a Foreign Remake of Sluizer's 1988 film Spoorloos.
