As of 2019, this is the highest-rated episode in the show's history, being watched by 33.6 million viewers in its premiere broadcast.

Beam Me Up, Scotty!: Bart says "Cowabunga" for the first time in the series (after having said it in the shorts), and it'd be the only time for a decade. Didn't stop a mountain of merchandise (official and bootleg) having him say it, or a number of people associating the word with him. Interestingly, during the DVD Commentary, the commentators admit they forgot they ever had him say it. In later seasons' commentaries, they'd forgot all over again, too.
Creator's Favorite Episode: In 2007, Larina Adamson, a supervising producer on the series, named this as her favorite episode of the series.
