• Creator Breakdown: Dirk Bogarde found the experience of making the film so draining, he almost considered quitting acting altogether.
• Enforced Method Acting: According to Liliana Cavani, Charlotte Rampling and Dirk Bogarde really hit each other during their fight scene.
• Fake American: Atherton, Lucia's American husband, is played by Italian actor Marino Masé.
• Fake Nationality: Applies to nearly the entire cast, since none of them are actually German or Austrian, except for Manfred Freyberger (Dobson).
• Same Language Dub: Pretty much every actor except Rampling and Bogarde was re-dubbed.
• Uncredited Role: Rampling and Bogarde rewrote much of their dialogue together, with input from Bogarde's partner Anthony Forwood.
• What Could Have Been: Mia Farrow and Dominique Sanda were considered for the role of Lucia. Romy Schneider was offered the part but turned it down.
