• Actor Allusion: Matthew Holness as Dominic Wingrave. When he confronts his wife Charlotte about her affair, she finds him sitting in his dark place.
• Actor-Inspired Element: Amelia Eve came up with a backstory for Jamie that was then incorporated into the monologue she tells Dani about herself in the moon flowers scene.
• Actor-Shared Background: Oliver Jackson-Cohen, like Peter Quint, is also a survivor of childhood sexual abuse.
• The Danza: Henry Thomas as Henry Wingrave.
• Fake Brit: Americans Henry Thomas, Carla Gugino, and Kate Siegel play Brits Henry Wingrave, the Storyteller/Jamie, and Viola Willoughby, respectively. Canadian actress Alex Essoe likewise plays Charlotte Wingrave.
• Fake Scot: English Oliver Jackson-Cohen as Scottish Peter Quint.

• Reality Subtext: Oliver Jackson-Cohen plays a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. In real life, he is also a survivor and has spoken about his struggles with PTSD stemming from it.
• Separated-at-Birth Casting: Amelia Eve and Carla Gugino resemble each other well enough to play the same character at different points in life.
• Tuckerization:
  • Dani Clayton is named for Jack Clayton, director of The Innocents, widely regarded as the best adaptation of The Turn of the Screw in existence.
  • Henry Wingrave is named for Henry James, and possibly also Henry Thomas.
• What Could Have Been:
  • Oliver Jackson Cohen was originally cast as Jaime, the gardener, but he thought it would be too jarring for viewers to see him as Victoria Pedretti's lover after having just played her twin brother.
  • A highly emotional scene was shot for the final episode but ultimately cut. It took place after Dani almost strangles Jamie, and would feature Jamie waking up to find Dani leaving and try to get her to stay.
