• The Cast Showoff: Michelle Pfeiffer sang all her songs. No vocal double was used.
• Dyeing for Your Art: Beau Bridges was not balding, but the script called for him to have a bald spot as Frank. In a 2014 interview, it was revealed that Jeff cut the bald spot into Beau's hair. Jeff explained, "So he let me - we had a couple of glasses of wine - and he allowed me to cut the bald patch on the back of his head." "Stupid move," Beau shot back.
• Enforced Method Acting: When real-life brothers Beau and Jeff Bridges' characters (Frank and Jack, respectively) have a fight and Jack very nearly breaks Frank's hand, Jeff very nearly actually broke Beau's hand. They planned to come up with a "safe word" in case things went too far, but Jeff forgot himself and Beau went to the hospital directly afterward. When he yells "my hand, my hand!", it's totally genuine.
• Real-Life Relative: The Baker brothers are played by real-life brothers Jeff and Beau Bridges.
• What Could Have Been:
  • When the film first went into development in 1986, 20th Century Fox wanted Bill Murray and Chevy Chase to star. Real Life brothers Randy Quaid and Dennis Quaid turned down the lead roles.
  • Madonna was originally approached for the role of Susie Diamond, but turned it down because she thought that the plot was "too mushy." Jodie Foster, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Brooke Shields and Debra Winger were also considered.
