• Word of God notes that there are two ways to activate Cross Server Portals:
  1) Use a Flint and Steel made from materials of the target server to light the portal (which was inspired by Minecraft: Story Mode). Portals lit in this way always glow with the color and theme of the target server.
  2) Use a book with commands or code written in them. When lit on fire, their code is expelled from the medium and executed on the spot. Due to the volatility of this, it is possible for a single typo to send things going sideways. The portals also don't always have the color of their target destination, which was why Dream didn't realize they had been sent to Skyblock until it was too late.
