- All-Star Cast: For a film that went through Development Hell, it has an All-Star cast. Aside from the leads, it includes Strother Martin, David Steinberg, Joanne Woodward, Norman Fell, Myrna Loy, Pat O'Brien, and Carl Reiner.
- Development Hell: The script was written in 1971, but couldn't move forward until Burt Reynolds took an interest in it. Even then, United Artists refused to do the film unless Reynolds also made Hooper.
- Dueling Works: Both The End and Hooper were released the same year. Hooper was a smash hit; The End... less so, though it wasn't a box office failure.
- Production Posse: It was The '70s, and Reynolds and DeLuise were joined at the hip. Field had also appeared in the previous year's Smokey and the Bandit.
- What Could Have Been:
- The script was originally written as a vehicle for Woody Allen.
- The ending had Marlon killing Sonny; Reynolds changed it to prevent the film from being needlessly dark.
