Completely Different Title: The first Japanese translation of the novel, first published in the early 1900s, was titled A Historical Story from Outside History, the King of the Cavern (史外史伝巌窟王 Shigai Shiden Gankutsu'ou), or just The King of the Cavern (巌窟王 Gankutsu'ou) for short. Although later Japanese editions simply translate the English title (モンテ・クリスト伯 Monte Cristo-haku), the Gankutsu'ou title is still popular among Japanese people to refer to the novel.
Tourist Bump: The novel is the reason why the Chateau d'If, otherwise an old prison of no particular note in the south of France, is popular with tourists.
