• Creator Backlash: Watt-Evans regards this to be the weakest book in the series, basically stating on his website that the main premise didn't have enough plot to hang a full-length novel on.
• Small Role, Big Impact: Although it's the author's least favorite book, it has the first appearances of Dumery (who will have another book in the future) and Teneria (who has appeared in several other books). In addition it establishes that there's a connection of some sort between witch and warlock magic.
