Trivia / The Bishop's Wife

Go To

  • All-Star Cast: In the Preacher's Wife version. Aside from Whitney & Denzel, there was also Loretta Devine, Gregory Hines, Lionel Ritchie and Jenifer Lewis.
  • Cast the Runner-Up: Originally Cary Grant played the bishop and David Niven the angel. When original director William A. Seiter left the film, Henry Koster replaced him and viewed what had been shot so far. He realized that the two were in the wrong roles. It took some convincing because Grant wanted the title role of the Bishop. He eventually accepted the change and his role as the angel was one of the most widely praised of his career.
  • Follow the Leader: The remake was released just as the show Touched by an Angel was becoming a hit.
  • The Other Marty: Teresa Wright was playing the bishop's wife in the William A. Seiter version until the director was abruptly fired. She had to be recast because she had fallen pregnant. Samuel Goldwyn's decision to start the film over again was a costly one, as $1 million had already been spent.
  • The Cast Showoff: Whitney Houston in the 90s version, who not only led the soundtrack for the film but sang live during the scenes when her character performed.
  • Troubled Production: Production on the film was hampered by weather issues, accidents, and Whitney Houston refusing to sing in the mornings.
  • What Could Have Been: Denzel Washington briefly considered Julia Roberts for the role of Julia before offering it to Whitney Houston.
