- California Doubling: The story is set in Galesburg, Illinois. It was an Australian producer who finally agreed to fund the movie, and he stipulated that it be shot down under. A labor strike then moved the production again to Auckland, New Zealand.
- Creator Cameo: Co-writer Bill Condon cameos as Bryan the first victim.
- Dawson Casting: Dan Shor, Marc McClure, and Dey Young were all in their mid-twenties when they were portraying high schoolers or college undergraduates. Averted with the 14 year old Elizabeth Cheshire who played the 14 year old Lucy Brown.
- Fake American: In spite of the New Zealand filming location, most of the cast remained American. Mrs. Haskell, however, was played by New Zealand actress Beryl Te Wiata. Nicole Massie, who played Sarah, is also British.
