• What Could Have Been:
  • It was decided that a recurring actor would need to play Laas. Jeffrey Combs was considered first, but it was felt that Combs playing yet another new character would be stretching him (and credulity) too thin. Andrew Robinson was considered next, but the producers decided that fans were too protective of Robinson's portrayal of Garak to allow him to play someone else. Although they did hold open auditions for the part, they were a total bust. They settled on J.G. Hertzler more or less by process of elimination.
  • The original plan for this episode would have featured Sisko coming to make an appeal to Odo after he left the station rather than Odo making the decision to return on his own, Sisko appealing to Odo that humanoids will always have a degree of racism and Sisko's honesty prompting Odo to return to the station.
