• Creator Backlash: Armin Shimmerman said that the episode was the worst of the series. As a Shakespeare professor, he likely took issue with the episode riffing on A Midsummer Night's Dream. Alexander Siddig was also less than impressed. Other cast members had more positive takes.
• Directed by Cast Member: This was Avery Brooks' third directorial effort.
• Recycled Script:
  • The storyline, with the parent of a regular Star Trek character from another series showing up and unwittingly projecting their emotions onto others thanks to a disease suffered by older members of their species, is basically a comedic remake of the TNG episode "Sarek."
  • The premise also bears some similarites to the early TNG episode "The Naked Now", with characters acting bizarre and trying to get into each other's beds. The scene with Dax and Sisko isn't too dissimilar to one with Crusher and Picard in that episode.
• Romance on the Set: Alexander Siddig (Bashir) and Nana Visitor (Kira) started dating in real life around the time of this episode. They would eventually go on to have a son in 1996, marry in 1997, and then divorce in 2001.
