  • Actor Allusion: The byline of the article about kissing Asians that Sam sends Henry credits the article to one Matt Smith. Matt Smith was Karen Gillan's costar on Doctor Who.
    • And the fact that Karen Gillan is once again starring opposite a man in a bow tie.
    • The trash can Henry puts in his office for Eliza has British phone booths on it.
    • A red Dalek can be found on Kevin's bedroom shelf
  • Actor-Shared Background: Charmonique went to Yale and the same actress, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, also went to Yale School of Drama in real life.
  • Colorblind Casting:
    • Since the show was loosely based on Pygmalion/My Fair Lady, producers originally wanted an older Englishman to play Henry Higgs. The crew could not find anyone right for the role until they did colorblind casting and found John Cho through Keli Lee who worked at ABC's Talent and Casting at the time. Even then, it took a long time to convince higher-ups he was right for the role, but it was a great achievement according to director Julie Anne Robinson who fought for John's casting. It is rare to see a romantic Asian male lead in an American series.
    • Sam Saperstein was originally written as a white Jewish character, but David Harewood, a Black British actor, gave a brilliant performance. Also found by Keli Lee.
  • The Cast Showoff: Episode 10, "Imperfect Harmony", gives most of the cast a chance to show off their singing ability at the company karaoke party.
  • Fake American:
    • Eliza's played by the famously Scottish Karen Gillan.
    • David Harewood is also English.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff:
    • The show is popular in China even years after the original U.S. broadcast. It also has a higher audience score on Douban than IMDb. Some fans have compared the series to a Korean Drama.
  • Production Posse: 9 years after Selfie aired, creator Emily Kapnek is working with Karen Gillan and John Cho again on a musical animated series called Rhona Who Lives by the River (2023).
  • The Pete Best: Tim Peper was originally supposed to be part of the main cast but was dropped after only appearing in a short scene in the pilot episode.
  • Real-Life Relative: The barista in "Never Block Cookies" who tries to flirt with Henry by giving him a free cookie is played by John Cho's actual wife Kerri Higuchi.
  • Real Life Writes the Hairstyle: Karen Gillan wore a wig for the entire series as she'd shaved her head for Guardians of the Galaxy (2014). She wore a generic wig for first half of the pilot and the hair she cut off was saved and turned into a personal wig for the rest of the series, which is why it looks so much like her normal hair.
  • Screwed by the Network: Arguably had little chance being put in ABC's infamous "Tuesday Night Death Slot."
