  • Channel Hop: Stateside, this was Gabriel's first release on Geffen Records, where he would remain until 2010, when he switched distribution to his own Real World label.
  • Executive Meddling: As mentioned on the main page, the retitle in North America was the result of Geffen Records pushing Gabriel to title the album something other than Peter Gabriel again.
  • Referenced by...:
    • Primus recorded a cover of "The Family and the Fishing Net" for their 1998 EP Rhinoplasty.
    • Coal Chamber recorded a cover of "Shock the Monkey" in 1999, featuring Ozzy Osbourne.
  • Refitted for Sequel: "Wallflower" was originally penned for Melt, only for it to fall through during that album's sessions. It was eventually reworked for Security.
  • What Could Have Been: According to Gabriel, "Wallflower" was originally written as a love song; after he saw an Amnesty International event on TV (Gabriel couldn't remember which one, but stated that it was "possibly The Secret Policeman's Ball"), the lyrics were reworked to make it a Protest Song against the treatment of political prisoners under Latin America's dictatorships.
  • Working Title: Several.
    • "The Rhythm of the Heat" was originally titled "Jung in Africa".
    • "Shock the Monkey" was originally titled "Black Bush".
    • "Lay Your Hands On Me" was originally titled "93", after the LinnDrum pattern used on the song.
