  • Acting for Two: In the 1989 film, the actors and actresses who play the members of Mack’s gang also fill in for many other bit parts, such as Elder Kessler’s fellow missionaries and their respective girlfriends, the various pedestrians the missionaries bump into at the park, and the dancers during the “Sailing On” sequence.
  • Dawson Casting: In the 1989 film, Wally’s actor is older than Jimmy’s, but Wally is born after Jimmy in the story.
  • Deleted Scene: A version of the play’s “Voices” number was filmed and edited for the 1989 film, but ultimately taken out from the finished film. It could be found as an extra on the DVD.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: There is no video of the original 1974 stage production currently available, meaning all that can be found of it is the soundtrack.
  • Real-Life Relative: In the 1989 film, Eric Hickenlooper (who plays Jimmy) is the younger brother of Bart Hickenlooper (who plays Wally.)
