Trivia / Porcupine Tree

Go To

  • All-Star Cast: Steve Wilson works with a lot of famous prog and metal musicians, and they often end up performing on Porcupine Tree albums. Mikael Åkerfeldt and Adrian Belew from King Crimson show up on Deadwing, and Alex Lifeson and Robert Fripp both contribute to Fear of a Blank Planet.
  • Creator Backlash: Wilson had a little rage moment when Porcupine Tree was first starting when critics began to label the band "The New Pink Floyd". He was not amused.
  • He Also Did: Keyboardist Richard Barbieri was also in the seminal new wave band Japan.
  • The Pete Best: A lot of the lyrics on Sunday were written by one of Wilson's school friends, Alan Duffy. By the time the band became an actual concern, the two had lost contact.
  • Reclusive Artist: Steven Wilson, full stop.
  • Role-Ending Misdemeanor: Chris Maitland was fired from the band after losing his temper and shoving Wilson against a wall during an awkward rehearsal session. At the time, Maitland was weary from the previous tour and struggling to adjust to the new direction that the band wanted to pursue on In Absentia. Maitland and Wilson would later work together again on the first Blackfield album.
  • Sequel Gap: Closure/Continuation released thirteen years after The Incident.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The Sky Moves Sideways was initially intended to be a single 50-minute track.
    • Deadwing was going to have a film, however Wilson has stated pitching the idea would be harder to do than with an album. Whether the film is dead or just in limbo due to Wilson juggling multiple projects is unknown. Some of the songs that would have been part of the project have since been made available, with "Happiness III" being released as a single in 2016. Good news came in early 2019, when Wilson announced that he and Mike Bennion were "reactivating" the script.
