Trivia / Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire

Go To

  • Channel Hop: When the series was dubbed by 4Kids Entertainment (during seasons 6-8), episodes were aired on Kids' WB!. However, once Pokémon Company International began dubbing the ninth season, the series was moved to Cartoon Network.
  • Creator Backlash: Andrew Rannells, the first English voice actor for Harley, hated his time voicing the character, viewing him as a harmful stereotype of LGBT individuals. In later years, he would decry the franchise as a whole for its tendency to play into stereotypes regarding gay men.
  • Distanced from Current Events: "The Battle of the Shaking Island! Barboach vs. Whiscash!!" never aired in Japan due to a series of earthquakes that hit Japan around that time. The event also banned the earthquake-causing moves Earthquakenote , Fissure, and Magnitude from the anime completely, though similar attacks such as Earth Power and Bulldoze introduced in later generations were still allowed to be featured.
  • Missing Episode: "Ash and May! The Hottest Battles in Hoenn!" was not dubbed, most likely for just being a mid-series Clip Show showcasing Ash and May's accomplishments in Hoenn up until that point.
  • The Other Darrin: It was around mid-Battle Frontier that 4Kids Entertainment lost the rights to the series, resulting in the entire cast sans Carter Cathcart (aka Jimmy Zoppi) as Gary Oak, and Kayzie Rogers as Wobbuffet, being replaced. Famously, this is where Sarah Natochenny took over as Ash from Veronica Taylor, though Natochenny was originally voiced by Rogers (under the pseudonym "Jamie Peacock") for the Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon direct-to-tv film until the backlash towards her voice resulted in the second recast.
  • Recast as a Regular:
    • Amy Birnbaum, who previously provided for Molly, a movie exclusive character from Pokémon 3, and several characters was cast as Max.
    • Jimmy Zoppi was cast as the voice for James, Meowth, and Professor Oak in Season 9. Beforehand, his most popular role was of Gary Oak (who made sporadic appearances from time to time in the first five seasons) and several one-off characters during the Kanto and Johto seasons.
    • In the European Spanish dub, Cristina Yuste ended up voicing May (thus getting a protagonist role in the Pokémon anime) after voicing lots of secondaries characters through the series (including Whitney and Duplica in the Johto season), that she would keep voicing even after May left the series for good.
