- Screwed by the Network: Austen first sold the manuscript for £10 but the publisher never published it. When she asked for it back so she could send it to someone who would, he demanded the return of the £10 and warned her that he'd sue if she tried publishing the novel elsewhere without paying him back. Later, after achieving success with a different publisher, Austen sent over the cash, got the manuscript back, and then took great delight in letting him know that he had passed up a work by the author of Pride and Prejudice.
- Working Title: Austen first named her draft Susan, then Catherine when she changed the protagonist's name. Northanger Abbey came from her brother when he submitted it for publishing after her death.
